Sammy Sadler — 'Heart Shaped Like Texas'
Sadler moves between Nashville and Bonham with the ease of someone who appreciates the worth each has to offer. This CD, "Heart Shaped Like Texas," is the product of expertise from several states, such as the mastering in Arkansas. His background musicians include steel guitar, keyboard, fiddle, and mandolin along with the standard drums, bass, electric and rhythm guitars, and several artists helping out with vocals.
"Trying To Get The Girl" jumped from No. 24 to No. 19 this week, waving to Miranda Lambert's previous No. 11 hit, now at No. 21 on its way north. Oh, what lengths men go through to impress that certain someone! is the subject of this chart-busting, chipper ditty of a hit.
Sadler is also a honky-tonk music genius with a crystal clear voice touched by a warm, romantic tone, especially noticeable on the Steve Wariner-Bill Anderson song, "I'll Always Have Denver." I'd like to see Sammy's promoters send that one to radio stations as the next release off this CD.
Sammy sings "John 3:16," written by Doug Deforest, with the fervor of a man who has placed his own life in God's hands, and he does it in such a way that it's not at all preachy. His own song, "Thank God," which closes out the CD, pulls from his own Christian growth through the years. When he sings, "Thank God He was there, or I might not be here," concludes with Sammy's having been shot on Music Row in Nashville, a tragic ending for his friend who died from another bullet fired at both of them.
Others on the CD are heart-felt trips back home, forward in time, the stuff of life. All danceable, well-mixed, and remember-able songs, some of which could become classics as time wears well on them.
Sadler's liner notes say, "First, I would like to thank God for giving me the talent and for saving my life, for without Him nothing is possible."
